Looking for a solid half-day fishing trip that puts you right where the action is? Our Chesapeake Bay inshore charter with Class Act Charters delivers exactly what you're after. We're talking four hours on some of the most productive inshore waters on the East Coast, targeting the species that make this bay famous – spot, croaker, and flounder. Captain Neal and his crew know these waters like the back of their hand, and they'll put you on fish whether you're a weekend warrior or someone who's never held a rod before. Pack your lunch, grab some drinks, and leave the rest to us. All your gear, licenses, and safety equipment are covered, so you can focus on what matters most – catching fish and having a great time with up to five of your buddies.
This charter runs as smooth as they come. You'll meet the crew at the dock, get a quick safety briefing, and head out to where the fish are biting. The Chesapeake Bay's inshore waters are perfect for this type of fishing – protected from rough seas but loaded with structure and current that holds baitfish and attracts the gamefish we're after. Captain Neal's approach is straightforward: he finds the fish, puts you over them, and keeps you there. The boat's equipped with everything you need, from quality rods and reels to tackle boxes stocked with the right baits for whatever's running. You'll spend your time fishing productive spots like grass beds, channel edges, and drop-offs where these species love to hang out. The crew stays busy keeping everyone's lines in the water and helping with everything from baiting hooks to netting fish.
We keep the fishing techniques simple but effective on these trips. Most of the time, you're bottom fishing with light tackle – think chicken rigs, hi-lo rigs, and simple bottom rigs that put your bait right in the strike zone. The crew sets up everyone with appropriate tackle for the conditions and target species. For spot and croaker, we're usually using bloodworms, nightcrawlers, or squid on small hooks. When flounder are the target, we might switch to live minnows, strips of squid, or even small jigs tipped with bait. The key is matching your presentation to what the fish want on any given day. Water depth typically ranges from 10 to 30 feet, so you're not dealing with heavy weights or complicated rigs. The crew handles all the technical stuff – reading the fish finder, choosing spots, and adjusting tackle as needed. Your job is to drop your line down, feel for that telltale tap, and set the hook when something grabs your bait.
"Captain Neal did an amazing job getting us in fish and keeping us on them! We had such a great time! His boat was in top notch condition and everything went very smoothly. He knew exactly what gear we needed to catch fish and keep pulling them in. I highly recommend him to anyway!" - Casey. "Great crew! Mike and Lou are excellent at what they do, would recommend, will charter with Class Act again" - James.
Spot are the bread and butter of Chesapeake Bay inshore fishing, and they're a blast to catch on light tackle. These silvery fish with their distinctive black spot behind the gill cover typically run 8 to 12 inches, though bigger ones up to 14 inches show up regularly. They're most active from late spring through early fall, with peak action usually happening in summer and early autumn. Spot love sandy and muddy bottoms where they root around for worms, crabs, and small shellfish. What makes them so popular with anglers is their willingness to bite – they're not particularly finicky, and once you find a school, you can often catch them one after another. Kids especially love targeting spot because they fight hard for their size and are great eating when you take some home for dinner.
Croaker are another Chesapeake Bay favorite that keep things interesting on these inshore trips. They get their name from the croaking sound they make when you pull them out of the water – it's caused by muscles vibrating against their swim bladder. Most croaker you'll catch run between 10 and 16 inches, with the occasional keeper pushing 18 inches or better. They show up in good numbers from late spring through fall, with some of the best fishing happening during summer months when they move into shallower water to feed. Croaker prefer areas with soft bottom where they can dig for worms, small crabs, and clams. They're known for their excellent table fare – mild, white, flaky meat that's perfect for frying or baking. Like spot, they're cooperative biters that make for steady action once you locate a productive area.
Flounder represent the prize catch on many of these inshore trips. These flatfish are masters of camouflage, lying on the bottom perfectly matched to their surroundings while waiting to ambush prey. Summer flounder, also called fluke, are the most common species we target, and they can range from small throwbacks up to doormat-sized fish over 20 inches. The best flounder fishing typically happens from late spring through early fall, with peak action during summer months. They love areas with current flow near structure – channel edges, drop-offs, and areas where hard bottom meets soft bottom. What makes flounder so exciting to catch is their aggressive strike and strong fight. They hit fast and pull hard, making runs toward the bottom. Plus, they're considered one of the best eating fish in the bay, with firm white meat that's perfect for just about any cooking method.
Ready to get out there and see what the Chesapeake Bay's inshore waters have to offer? This charter delivers exactly what serious anglers and casual fishers are looking for – productive fishing, professional guidance, and a relaxed atmosphere where everyone can enjoy their time
